Equality guidance of the European Commission to insurance providers
Date: 22/12/2011On 22 December 2011 the European Commission adopted comprehensive guidelines for insurance providers operating in the EU to offer equal premiums for both sexes. By issuing the guidelines, the Commission reacted to the judgement of the Court of Justice of the European Commission, under which different amounts of premiums for men and women constitute gender discrimination. The adopted guidelines are the product of consultations with the member states and other parties involved, and they have refined the definitions such as “new contract”. They also give specific insurance examples where the gender was not significant for applying a different premium amount and thus do not require changes.
